How to Become a Mentor
Getting started is easy! Our team will guide you through each step to ensure you feel prepared and confident before being matched with a child or youth.
Step 1: Apply
Complete a volunteer application with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Pembina Valley.
Step 2: Screening & References
Submit the required screening documents:
✔ Criminal Record Check
✔ Vulnerable Sector & Child Abuse Registry Check
✔ References
Step 3: Confidentiality Agreement
Review and sign our confidentiality agreement.
Step 4: Interview
Meet with a BBBSPV staff member to discuss your interests, goals, and mentoring preferences.
Step 5: Training
Complete the required mentor training to prepare you for a successful mentoring relationship.
Step 6: Acceptance
Once all requirements are completed, you will be notified of your acceptance into the program.
The Matching Process
Our staff carefully gets to know both volunteers and the children and youth waiting for a mentor.
Step 1: Potential Match
A potential match is discussed with:
✔ The volunteer mentor
✔ The child or youth
✔ The parent or guardian (where applicable)
Step 2: Introduction Meeting
BBBSPV staff arrange a meeting between the mentor, child or youth, and parent/guardian to get to know one another.
Step 3: The Match Begins!
If everyone feels it’s a good fit, the mentoring relationship officially begins.
Ongoing Support
Our staff remain involved throughout the match, providing support, guidance, and resources to both mentors and families to help ensure a positive and successful experience for everyone involved.
